Rachelle’s Story
Catholic Charities Steuben/Livingston recently assisted a family in a truly difficult situation: homelessness. Rachelle’s (clients named changed to preserve anonymity) homelessness was for reasons truly out of her control. Her children had been living with her ex-husband and visiting her on the weekends, but after he became homeless, her four children had nowhere to stay except at Rachelle’s two-bedroom apartment. Within a week her landlord was going through the process of evicting her for violating occupancy laws. Not knowing what else to do Rachelle turned to the Livingston County Department of Social Services for housing assistance, and they referred her to Catholic Charities Steuben/Livingston. We helped her and her family move into one of our Emergency Housing units soon after, and she was able to have an entire house to stay in with her children while she was engaged in the process of finding permanent housing of her own. This meant that instead of living out of a hotel (or worse, her car), Rachelle now had a place to cook meals for her children and give them enough space to play and study. The housing search was difficult given the size of the family and the income restrictions placed on their search, for although Rachelle worked full time for a local in-home care facility, she did not make enough money to pay for many of the 3- and 4-bedroom apartments in the area. When we finally found Rachelle a 4-bedroom apartment in a nearby village, Catholic Charities provided Rachelle with financial assistance towards her security deposit. Catholic Charities also helped her obtain beds for her children through another local agency, Focus on the Children. At the end of a month’s time Rachelle went from living alone, to being homeless with 4 children and not even a bed for each of them to sleep in, to being happily housed in a fully furnished 4-bedroom apartment a short walk from her children’s school. A lot can happen in 30 days.
